Attendance & Absence

All students at Leigh Academy Mascalls must maintain an attendance of 97% or above.

Good attendance is important because:

  1. Statistics show a direct link between underachievement and poor attendance
  2. 90% attendance reduces a child’s chance of achieving 5 or more 9-5 grades at GCSE from 81% to around 57%.
  3. 80% attendance throughout secondary school is the equivalent of missing a year’s worth of education.
  4. Regular attenders find school routines, school work and friendships easier to cope with.

The table below summarises the three different attendance categories.

The "On track" column is green and includes attendance rates of 100%, 99%, and 98%, which correspond to 0, 4, and 8 days off school in a year, respectively. The "Concerning" column is yellow/orange and shows attendance rates of 90% and 84%, which equate to 19 and 30 days off school in a year. The "Seriously concerning" column is red and highlights an attendance rate of 80%, which is equivalent to 38 days off school in a year.

It is equally important to be punctual. The table shows the impact of lateness on your child’s learning.
