Dear Students and Parents/Carers,
I write to invite student applications for a visit to Bereko, Tanzania in 2027. This visit will build on Mascalls’ historic relationship with the town of Bereko and my planning visit in October. Students will travel to the town of Bereko as guests of the Bishop of Kondoa and work with the local Church and Town Council on a variety of projects including:
– Working with students and staff at Bereko Primary and Secondary Schools and Kurasini Primary School
– Working with children and staff at the SEN unit
– Supporting Bereko Health Centre
We will end the visit with a stay in Arusha, which includes safaris in Tarangire and Arusha National Parks and excursions to the Shanga Social Enterprise and Cultural Centre. Images of Bereko and the opportunity can be viewed here.
The exact dates of travel are to be confirmed but it will take place for around 2.5 weeks in June/July 2027 after the final A-Level examinations and before the end of the school year. The cost of the trip will be around £2000-£2200 which includes flights, all travel in Tanzania, accommodation in Bereko and Arusha and all food (apart from personal snacks). The exact cost will depend on flight prices and the exchange rate.
We have a maximum of 8-10 places available. Students wishing to take part need to complete this linked form with their parent/guardian. Students may be asked to attend an informal discussion to talk about their reasons for wanting to participate. Any Year 11 student selected for the trip is committing to attend Leigh Academy Mascalls Sixth Form for their Post 16 studies and is responsible for ensuring they meet the entry requirements for their courses. Once the team has been finalised a deposit of £150 will be required (all payments are non-returnable unless the trip is cancelled). Students need to be aware that we expect them to have good attendance, attitude and behaviour at school and this will be monitored.
This is an amazing and life-changing opportunity for students and will also add value to future university and job applications. If parents have any questions, then please contact me on emma.honey@mascalls.latrust.org.uk for more information.
Yours faithfully,
Miss Honey
Vice Principal
