Scientific Calculators in Lessons

Dear Parent/Carers,

Re: Scientific Calculators in Lessons

I am writing to inform you that your son/daughter is required to have their own scientific calculator for use in all Mathematics and Science lessons.

Please note that this must be a dual-line display scientific calculator (capable of inputting and displaying fractions) in order to meet the demands of GCSE examinations. We have found that students who do not have access to an appropriate calculator are at a significant disadvantage and, in some cases, have lost valuable marks in assessments and examinations.

For GCSE Mathematics, we recommend the Casio FX-83GTCW (or Casio FX-991CW), both of which are approved by the examination boards and widely available from most retailers. These models have a dual-line display, allowing fractions to be entered and viewed correctly. Alternatively, the Casio FX-83GTCW can be purchased directly from the academy for £9.55 via Scopay.

A short purchase period will be allowed; however, given the importance of regular access to a calculator, students who fail to bring one to lessons will have conduct cards signed by their class teacher.

For students considering A Level Mathematics, we would recommend the Casio FX-991CW, which is a more advanced scientific calculator. This model includes additional functions such as graphing, spreadsheets, and statistical calculations required for post-16 study.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards,

N. Metcalf Director of Mathematics
